Purine calculator: how many purines are in your meal?
Gout diets in Japan keep purines under 400 mg a day. Meat, fish and beer carry the most; one cooked chicken breast can carry 300 mg or more. Type a meal or a drink, or snap a photo, and see the purines in each one.

How many purines a day on a gout diet?
The body breaks purines down into uric acid. Japan’s gout guidance gives 400 mg of purines a day as a ceiling, and the calculator compares your meal with that sample amount. US guidance gives no number.
The American College of Rheumatology’s 2020 guideline recommends limiting alcohol, purine-rich food and high-fructose corn syrup. Food moves uric acid by small amounts; it matters more for what sets off a flare.
Which everyday plates carry the most purines?
These six plates carry the most purines in Cloche’s food data. Amounts come from the USDA and NIH purine tables, where studies disagree: raw chicken breast runs from 130 to 290 mg per 100 g. See chicken cut by cut and shrimp next to other seafood.
| Plate | Portion | Estimated purines | Of 400 mg reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grilled Chicken Breast | 6 oz | 629 mg | 157% |
| Grilled Salmon | 1 fillet, 6 oz | 510 mg | 127% |
| Salmon Poke Bowl | 1 bowl, rice, salmon, veggies | 506 mg | 126% |
| Burrito Bowl | 1 bowl | 461 mg | 115% |
| Pad Thai | 1 plate | 395 mg | 99% |
| Chicken Curry with Rice | 1 plate | 381 mg | 95% |
How does the purine calculator work?
Describe the meal and the drinks. Cloche splits it into foods, sizes each one and estimates purines from the USDA and NIH tables. It also reads the alcohol, since a beer adds purines and slows how the body clears uric acid.
For the whole day, not one meal, see Cloche for gout. More free tools: the sodium calculator and the fiber calculator. Every number is an estimate; we publish how far off the estimates run against USDA reference foods.
Questions people ask
Is chicken bad for gout?
Chicken is moderate to high in purines, about 130 to 290 mg per 100 g raw, more once cooked. A breast at dinner is fine for many people with gout; two meat meals in a day add up fast.
Which drinks are worst for gout?
Beer, because it brings purines and alcohol together. Spirits and sugary sodas with high-fructose corn syrup also raise the risk of a flare. Wine is lower.
How many purines are allowed per day with gout?
Japan’s gout guidance sets 400 mg a day as a ceiling. US guidance gives no number and asks people to limit purine-rich meat and seafood.
Are plant purines a problem?
Studies find purines from vegetables, beans and tofu don’t raise gout risk the way meat and seafood do, even though spinach and mushrooms carry some.
When a flare comes, see what you ate the two days before
Cloche is a food journal for iPhone. Say what you ate and drank or take a photo, and it keeps the purines, alcohol and fructose for every day, so you can look back when a flare starts.
