Is shrimp bad for gout?
Yes, in a dinner portion, though shrimp carries fewer purines than salmon or sardines. Cloche estimates 6 oz of shrimp at 340 mg of purines, 85% of the 400 mg a day Japan’s gout guidance sets as a ceiling. The USDA and NIH purine tables measure raw shrimp at 182 to 234 mg per 100 g.

How does shrimp compare with other seafood?
Shrimp sits in the middle of the seafood the US samples measured. Anchovies and sardines carry the most, salmon reads 250 to 260 mg per 100 g, and cod 110 mg.
| Food, as measured | Purines per 100 g | In 6 oz (170 g) |
|---|---|---|
| Anchovy, raw | 411 mg | 699 mg |
| Sardine, raw | 345 mg | 587 mg |
| Salmon, raw | 250 to 260 mg | 425 to 442 mg |
| Shrimp, raw | 182 to 234 mg | 310 to 398 mg |
| Tilapia, raw | 186 mg | 316 mg |
| Crab, blue, lump | 148 mg | 251 mg |
| Squid, raw | 135 mg | 230 mg |
| Cod, raw | 110 mg | 188 mg |
| Oysters, canned | 107 mg | 182 mg |
Fish is not automatically the lighter choice. Michael Greger says that “gram per gram fish may actually be worse in terms of uric acid production.” Cloche reads the purines in the portion you ate, whatever the food’s reputation.
Six ounces of shrimp carry about the purines of an 8 oz steak.
Cloche reads 340 mg in 6 oz of shrimp and 341 mg in an 8 oz steak. A grilled salmon fillet reads more than either, at 510 mg, and a plate of pad thai 395 mg.
| Plate | Portion | Estimated purines | Of 400 mg reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grilled Salmon | 1 fillet, 6 oz | 510 mg | 127% |
| Salmon Poke Bowl | 1 bowl, rice, salmon, veggies | 506 mg | 126% |
| Pad Thai | 1 plate | 395 mg | 99% |
| Steak | 8 oz | 341 mg | 85% |
| Shrimp | 6 oz | 340 mg | 85% |
| Tuna Poke Bowl | 1 bowl | 312 mg | 78% |
Estimates for a typical portion, with purines from the USDA and NIH purine tables (March 2025 release). Recipes and portions vary.
A 3 oz serving of shrimp stays under 200 mg for one meal.
The body breaks purines down into uric acid, and meat, fish and organ meats carry the most. Half the plate, 3 oz of shrimp, reads about 170 mg, under the 200 mg the demo uses for one meal.
The American College of Rheumatology’s 2020 gout guideline recommends limiting purines without setting a number. Japan’s gout guidance sets 400 mg a day, which the demo uses for the day. They are sample amounts for reading a plate, not your target.
Six ounces of cooked shrimp carry 1,610 mg of sodium.
Cloche’s sodium figure comes from USDA’s sample of cooked shrimp, which notes it may contain additives that keep the shrimp moist. A 6 oz grilled chicken breast reads 126 mg and a grilled salmon fillet 95 mg. If your doctor watches your blood pressure too, the free sodium calculator reads any meal you type.
What makes a shrimp dinner easier on a gout diet?
Gout diets build the plate around vegetables, with eggs or dairy for protein and seafood or meat as a side rather than the whole plate. Water or coffee to drink, and fruit whole rather than juiced. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases names alcohol, sweet drinks and purine-rich food as the three to limit.
The drink counts. Beer adds purines from the yeast on top of its alcohol. The alcohol slows how fast the kidneys clear uric acid, and Cloche counts both.
Questions people ask
Do scallops raise uric acid levels?
Scallops carry fewer purines than shrimp. Japanese measurements in the USDA and NIH purine tables put raw scallops at about 77 mg per 100 g, against 182 to 234 mg for raw shrimp in the US samples.
Can people with gout eat salmon?
Salmon carries more purines than shrimp per 100 g: 250 to 260 mg raw in the US samples. Cloche estimates a 6 oz grilled fillet at 510 mg. What fits your diet is a question for your clinician; Cloche shows what each portion carried.
Is shrimp worse than chicken for gout?
Per 100 g raw, shrimp reads 182 to 234 mg and chicken breast 131 to 289 mg, so the two overlap. Cloche estimates 6 oz of shrimp at 340 mg and a 6 oz grilled chicken breast at 629 mg.
