What makes a meal more likely to cause heartburn?

The American College of Gastroenterology’s 2022 guideline recommends not eating within two to three hours of lying down. The evidence for cutting single foods is weaker, and it suggests avoiding only the foods that bother you.

Fat slows how fast the stomach empties, and a big meal stretches it. The checker compares your meal with 35 g of fat, a sample amount Cloche uses for one meal, not a guideline number.

How does the heartburn checker work?

Describe the meal and pick the time. Cloche splits it into foods, estimates the fat and calories from USDA values, and reads the meal against the hour you ate. It can’t know your own foods; a journal kept for two weeks shows those.

For the whole day, not one meal, see Cloche for heartburn. More free tools: the saturated fat calculator and the fiber calculator. Every number is an estimate; we publish how far off the estimates run against USDA reference foods.
